Our Norfolk-based breaks will be of benefit to anyone wishing to acquire or hone their birdwatching skills. Practical demonstrations will show how, for example, some of the more difficult common species may be told apart (e.g. Arctic Tern from Common Tern, Black-tailed Godwit from Bar-tailed), while theoretical discussion will cover a variety of topics, from evolution to the reasons which determine why some birds visit us only to breed, while others come to overwinter.

Programme 2008

The following weekend breaks all run from 5pm on Friday evening until 5pm on Sunday evening.

February 15-17, 22-24 FULL, 29-March 2
At this time of year an abundance of grey geese allows us to get to grips with telling them apart on the ground and in the air. Also to be seen now are Snow Bunting, Hawfinch, Twite and Shore Lark.

March 7-9, 14-16, 28-30
April 4-6, 11-13 FULL, 18-20 FULL
Stone Curlew and Wheatear are among the early migrants to have arrived by now, while the activities of the Woodpeckers gives us a good opportunity to differentiate between Great- and Lesser-spotted by their calls and drumming.

May 30-June 1
More migrants have now arrived and, after an absence of nearly a year, the sounds of the Willow Warbler, Whitethroat and Tree Pipit once again fill the air, as do the voices of birdwatchers debating whether that was a Blackcap or a Garden Warbler they just heard.

October 10-12, 17-19
As the Ring Ouzel departs our shores, so the winter thrushes arrive from Scandinavia. Norfolk is one of the main entry points for Redwings and Fieldfares and it is possible to see all six thrushes in one day at this time of year. Twite and Snow Bunting again appear, while Golden Plovers have arrived in force by now.

November 7-9, 21-23, 28-30
This is quite simply the time of the Pink-footed geese for us, as over 150,000 of them choose to winter here along the North Norfolk coast line.

December 5-7, 12-13
A visit to a 'Harrier roost' is usually rewarded now by an encounter with both Hen and Marsh Harrier, as well as Short-eared and Barn Owl, Sparrowhawk and Merlin. The Norfolk shore is the winter home of a variety of sea duck such as Velvet and Common Scoter, Eider and Long-tailed Duck as well as that of Divers and Grebes.
